Industry Guidelines

This page outlines the industry recommendations and responsibilities for convenors and artists collaborating with art models from EAMM. Please read carefully and contact us if you have any questions or concerns. These recommendations are based on those set by the Life Models Society VIC.

Convenors' Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain a safe environment for models and artists.

  • Facilitate the session and act as a liaison between the model and artists.

  • Address any safety breaches or concerns that may arise during the session.

  • Report any incidents to the agency, including completing an incident report if necessary.

  • Ensure timely model payments.

We encourage you to read the information below to explore these responsibilities in more depth.

We look forward to collaborating with you!

  • Creating a comfortable atmosphere is essential for the well-being and performance of the model. Art models are in a uniquely vulnerable position and require a high standard of privacy and professional conduct from convenors and artists. Please adhere to the following guidelines to ensure a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved:

    1. Ensure Privacy: Make certain that your studio is private and secure, preventing any public view of the model. Cover any exposed windows and doors.

    2. Manage Security Cameras: Ensure that security cameras are turned off or positioned away from the model performance space.

    3. Digital Drawing Mediums: Digital drawing tools may only be used if their lenses are covered with stickers or tape. Additionally, phones should be put away while the model is nude.

    4. Model’s Space: The model's space is for their exclusive use only. Nothing should be placed in their space that is not intended for their use. Artists and convenors must not use the model’s space at any time for any purpose.

    5. Maintain Respectful Distance: Everyone must remain at least 1.5 meters away from the model while the model is nude to ensure their comfort and privacy. Encroaching on this space (closer than 1.5 meters) without permission is a breach of privacy and can make the model extremely uncomfortable. If you need to approach the model’s space for any reason, please ask for the model's permission before doing so.

    6. Temperature Control: It is the convenor's responsibility to ensure that the temperature in the workspace is comfortable for the model.

      • Summer: Please supply at least one fan to maintain a cool and comfortable environment.

      • Winter: Provide two fan-forced heaters with extension cords to ensure adequate warmth.

    7. Respectful Compliance: Please comply respectfully with any reasonable requests from the model and refrain from commenting on the legitimacy of those requests. It is essential to honor the model's boundaries and ensure their comfort at all times. Maintaining a supportive atmosphere is crucial for the model’s performance and overall wellbeing.

    8. Enforce Safety Standards: The convenor must enforce these safety standards and promptly rectify any breaches.

Thank you for your cooperation in creating a positive experience for everyone involved!

  • Immediate Response Required: Any breach of a model’s privacy or safety must be addressed immediately. Many safety breaches have straightforward solutions and can be resolved quickly. If a breach cannot be fixed but the session can continue, the model will pose clothed. In severe cases where the model feels unsafe and cannot continue the session for reasons related to mental or physical health, they have the right to leave and receive full pay.

    Safety Breaches Include:

    • A member of the public entering the space.

    • An attendee behaving inappropriately or aggressively (including the use of offensive language).

    • Use of phones or devices with uncovered lenses while the model is nude.

    • Leaving the studio space unattended while the model is nude.

    • Unregulated studio temperature (both summer and winter).

    • Lack of drinking water.

    • Unrestrained pets.

    • An outside threat.

    • Severe weather conditions.

Public Access: Members of the public should not have access to the studio during the session. If unavoidable (e.g., building maintenance), instruct the model to pose while robed or clothed until the work is complete.

Dealing with Inappropriate Behaviour: If an artist (or model) acts inappropriately or aggressively, calmly ask them to change their behaviour. If they do not comply, request that they leave the session immediately. Should they refuse, contact the authorities. Never leave the model alone with an aggressor. Ensure the model reaches their mode of transport safely after the session or if they choose to leave early due to the incident. Report all incidents and actions taken to the agency and necessary authorities.

Unsolicited Photography: If an artist is caught taking photos or is suspected of taking photos of the model during the session, it is the convenor's responsibility to check the device in question and delete all footage of the model if found. If footage of the model is found, the person in breach must be asked to leave the session immediately.

Convenor Absence: In the event a convenor must leave unexpectedly, please appoint a secondary facilitator to oversee activities until the primary convenor's return. Models are not convenors and should never be left in charge of a session. A convenor must always be present while the model is nude to ensure safety.

Temperature Control: Extreme temperatures are dangerous for the model. If comfortable temperature requirements cannot be met, the model retains the right to model clothed.

Incident Reporting: Report all incidents to the agency, including cases where an artist or model was asked to leave a session. Keeping the agency informed helps protect models and artists and supports accurate risk assessment. For guidance on handling privacy and security breaches, please contact the agency.

  • Art models are performers and require a designated space to perform. This area should be at least 1.5 meters squared and positioned at least 1.5 meters away from artists. Please ensure that this space is set up prior to the model’s arrival so adjustments can be made if necessary without impeding session time.

    Requirements for the Model’s Space:

    1. Padded Covering: The space should include a padded covering to protect the model during sustained poses. We recommend using a folded blanket (or two).

    2. Avoid Yoga Mats, Thick Mats, and Mattresses: Yoga mats do not provide enough cushioning and can make it difficult for the model to balance during standing poses. Thick mats and mattresses also interfere with the model's ability to balance and can make poses more strenuous.

    3. Temperature Regulation: Set up fans or heaters in the model’s space before their arrival. If possible, provide the model with the remote for the air conditioning so they can adjust the temperature as needed.

    4. Cushions and Props: Providing the model with a few cushions is appreciated but not required. Additionally, offering props such as stools or chairs can support the model in creating interesting long poses. While this is encouraged, it is not essential.

Thank you for considering the comfort of our models!

  • The convenor has several key responsibilities regarding the facilitation of sessions:

    1. Set Up: Prepare the studio space and designated model area before the model arrives, allowing time for adjustments if needed.

    2. Model Orientation and Arrival: Models will arrive at least 10 minutes prior to session commencement. Upon arrival, show the model the facilities (drinking water, change room, bathroom, and stage space) and provide a written outline of the session program. We recommend allowing our professional models to time poses, enabling the convenor to participate in artistic activities and manage other responsibilities.

    3. Welcome Artists: Greet artists, outline privacy guidelines (including limitations on digital devices and proximity to model), explain the program, and introduce the model.

    4. Session Commencement: When everyone is ready, call the session to order. Begin by welcoming all attending artists and introducing the model. Briefly outline safety procedures, including maintaining distance from the model and asking everyone to silence their phones and put them away for the duration of the session. Check that anyone using digital art devices has their lenses covered (using stickers or tape) and provide lens covers if needed.

    5. Secure the Space: Ensure that the space is private and secure at the commencement of the session.

    6. Maintain Safety and Privacy: Uphold safety, security, and privacy throughout the session, addressing any breaches or concerns immediately.

    7. Manage Breaks: Ensure the model takes a minimum 10-minute break halfway through the session and call the session back to action after the break.

    8. Applause for the Model: At the end of the session, it is customary to applaud the model for their performance. This gesture is often initiated by the convenor, as new artists may be unfamiliar with this tradition. Applauding is a sign of respect and appreciation for the model's hard work, and we encourage everyone to uphold this custom.

    9. Pack Down: After the session, pack down the space and ensure timely payment for the model (if paying the model directly in cash).

    10. Provide Feedback: We are always looking to improve our service and standards. Providing feedback on the models performance and your experience with the agency is always appreciated. Please submit feedback to admin@eammanagement.com.au.

Thank you for your attention to these important responsibilities!

  • Session Program: When designing a session program, factor in 5 minutes for model water breaks and short stretches between poses. Groups may discuss and adjust the pose program at any time during the session. Please communicate with the model to ensure they are comfortable with any adjustments.

    Example Program (2-Hour Session):

    5 x 1-minute poses

    5 x 5-minute poses

    2 x 10-minute poses

    10-minute break

    1 x 15-minute pose

    2 x 20-minute poses

    Mandatory Breaks:

    • A minimum 10-minute break during a two-hour session

    • A minimum 15-minute break during a 2.5-hour session

    • A minimum 20-minute break during a three-hour session

Additionally, models may take a 5-minute break between poses exceeding 20-minutes to ensure proper blood flow. This is vital for the model's physical safety and longevity. It’s recommended that either the convenor or the model times these breaks to help keep the group on schedule.

Unless the session break is one hour or more, the break will be included in the paid session time.

Session Extensions: Never ask a model to work past the designated session end time without compensation. You may request that a model extend the session for the same hourly rate or higher, but models have the right to decline. If a model is late, you may ask them to complete the agreed-upon session time without additional compensation.

Important Note: Please inform the agency if a model arrives less than 10 minutes before the session start time. We pride ourselves on providing a professional and reliable service, and it is important to know if a model is not upholding these standards so we can provide you with the best service possible.

  • Cash Payments: If you have agreed to pay the model in cash, you may do so at any time (before, during, or after the session).

Invoice Payments: If payment is to be made via invoice through the agency, you will receive the invoice the following Monday.

Tips: Models may accept tips and retain 100% of any tips given. If you choose to tip through an invoice, please specify the amount and the model's name.

  • Uphold Privacy and Security Standards: All privacy and security protocols must be adhered to during one-on-one sessions. This includes ensuring that the model's space is private and secure and maintaining a respectful space from the model. Please do not initiate physical contact with the model at any time.

Prohibit Digital Devices: The use of phones or untaped digital devices remains prohibited. If conducting a photography session, photos should only be taken with the designated camera—no phones or tablets are allowed.

Prioritise Communication: Effective communication is essential for a seamless and safe one-on-one session. Regularly check in with your model to ensure their comfort.

Act on Feedback Promptly: Be attentive to any feedback from the model and take immediate action on any requests to maintain a supportive and safe environment.

Providing Identification: Clients working one-on-one with models are required to provide valid photo identification to the agency upon booking. These documents are only released to the relevant authorities if an incident occurs. This supports us in creating a safe work environment for our models.
